Hiked Middle Carter, South Carter and Carter Dome on September 1, 2014. These were peaks 492, 493 and 494 for “The Grid over 60”. Hiked these with Mike Lynch on a very humid day. We parked at 19 Mile Brook Trail and then did the short road walk to Camp Dodge and then the shortcut to the Imp Trail to the North Carter trail to the Carter-Moriah trail. Not much of interest going up the Imp and North Carter trails. Met a Japanese through hiker at the junction of the North Cater trail and Carter-Moriah trail. He had spent the night on Carter Dome and was headed for the Rattle River shelter. Views from Middle Carter were hazy.
The Carter-Moriah trail is nice as there interesting changes in the scenery with areas of grassy bog bridges mixed with the usual rocky areas.
There aren’t any views from the summit of South Carter but I did enjoy my usual PBJ there and chatted with another through hiker by the name of “Catfish”. He was also trying to get to the Rattle River shelter for the night.
On the way over to Carter Dome there was quite a bit of Bunch Berry with it’s attractive red berries.
The views from Carter Dome were also hazy but the clouds had lifted a little bit.
On the way down the Carter Dome trail there is a nice little waterfall which is a good place to take a break for a drink and to cool off and then out to the tailhead.
Only 82 left to finish “The Grid over 60”.
