North and South Hancock

Hiked North and South Hancock on August 28, 2014. Peaks 490 and 491 for “The Grid over 60”. Haven’t hiked in New Hampshire for a while as I spent 3 weeks in Switzerland hiking and visiting with family. I was on trail at 7:50 in order to get the uphill portion of the hike done in the cooler part of the day. All of the many stream crossings had low water and were easy to cross.

There were a few fall flowers out, including these New England Asters.

I continued up the Hancock Loop trail and took a left where the loop split and went up the very steep North Hancock portion of the trail. At the summit view point the Franconia Ridge was in the clouds but you could see the Osceolas, East Osceola, Osceola, Middle Osceola and West Osceola. Middle and West are bushwacks through some very thick spruce.

On the way over to South Hancock there were mushrooms out but nothing very colorful.

Just below the summit of South Hancock on the trail there is a nice view off to the northwest towards the Franconia Ridge which was still in the clouds. You could see Arrow Slide on North Hancock very clearly.

I continued down the steep portion of the trail and then back out to the road. There has been some very nice trail work on both the Hancock Notch trail and the Hancock Loop trail that have fixed some areas of bad erosion and muddy spots.

North and South Twin

Hiked North and South Twin on August 3, 2014. These were peaks 488 and 489 towards completing “The Grid over 60”. Got to the Gale River Parking lot at the same time as Tim Lucia and his Golden Retriever Gryffin. We hiked together up to Galehead Hut. He was going to hike Galehead and then over to Garfield.

After taking a break at the hut, Tim went over to Galehead and I hiked the steep climb up to South Twin. The views were a little hazy but still good enough for a picture.

I didn’t linger long on South Twin as I wanted to beat the predicted afternoon showers and thunderstorms. I headed over to North Twin where I took a few pictures and ate a sandwich (PBJ).

After eating my sandwich I went back to South Twin and down to the hut where I took another short break and then headed back down the Garfield Ridge trail and the Gale River trail. At the junction there was a strange sight that I hadn’t noticed on the way up in the morning.
